Lessons Learned this Father’s Day…

IMG_4480 Lesson #1—that kickin it with Gramma and Grampa and the cousins at CountryFest is still awesome, even if it is Day #15 of rain in the Summery Month of June and the super scone booth has opted to prematurely close its drenched doors, or flaps, or sliding windows…

IMG_4481 **Aunt Kirsten must remember to pick up some Rhodes roll dough to make our own super fancy scones—I’m so creative that way, and just look at those happy/ sconey-anticipating smiles…

IMG_4413 Lesson #2—learned that Miss Morgan and her superstar dad share some distinct similarities, via her “How Well do You Know Your Dad” worksheet from school --I do love those things, such grand info to be gleaned!  For instance, they both share the love of their very favorite holiday-Morgan’s birthday!  His favorite food is “meat” (good call on her part), her favorite is “Kari Chicken” which is also in the meat family and quite sumptuous, so right on!  This one I’m not as sure on, but apparently his favorite song is “Poker Face”???  Hmm…

IMG_4496 Lesson #3—Long, long ago, when I was a bi-focaled glasses-wearing and bi-level hairdo-sporting 12- or 13-year-old brunette (painting a lovely picture there, aren’t I), Father’s Day was fast approaching.  My dear mom, being the wonder woman Relief Society President that she was (still a wonder woman) baked and baked and baked (somewhat similarly to the way pioneer children walked and walked and walked and walked) the most wonderful CREAM PUFFS for all of the fortunate men in our ward!  We had never had such delicacies in our family, and I knew that mom had totally been holding out on us never making them for all of us starving children, I digress…The great thing with the cream puffs is that they must be filled with CREAM and it was tasty—pudding and Cool Whip, a winning combination.  The best part about having your mom be the Relief Society President, is that the chance of there being left-overs is pretty good, and since we actually lived with her, that would considerably increase our odds of getting to consume the excess of those little lovelies!  I have very fond memories of that cream puffy year, such fond mems, in fact, that if at this point in my life I have any say in potential Father’s Day bounty at Church, I’m saying “YES!!”  This year the lucky men of our ward got to enjoy big and soft and wonderful pink-frosted sugar cookies from Schmidt’s Pastry Cottage (doesn’t that just sound delightful?) and I don’t think the picture does them the justice they deserve, because they most certainly are deserving!  I brought the magical year of the cream puffs up with my mom last night and to my complete shock and utter dismay, her mems are not just sketchy, they are nil, nothing, nada, zilch, zippo—none!  How can that be??  So many wonderful cream puffs!!  So much baking for precise amounts of time on so many cookie sheets!!  So much cooling and scooping out of the insides to create a perfect shell!!  Such an impressive impact on me, not so much on the pastry chef.  Maybe it’s because everything she makes is delish, and this was just one in a long line of tasty morsels, maybe you never know what little things your kiddos will remember…

IMG_4456 Lesson #4—this one is not a new one for me at all, but I’m always thankful for the Daddy of my kids (and he loves sugar cookies, too, especially from Schmidts, wow-that sure worked out nicely)…

IMG_4461 **he’s also great with the lawn and with 4-year-old’s wearing invisible shoes…

First of all Morgan your hair looks darling! Second - the father's in our ward received nothing this year, no nuts, no chocolate and certainly not cream puffs!!! Did you have anything to do with the pink cookies!

Kirsten, I got to be the buyer for the Fathers in our ward. We picked up donuts from Dunford and little milk cartons (think school lunch) at Maceys. The men seemed to love it, too! I think the whole thing was under 55 bucks! Why some wards do nothing is a mystery. Those Dad's deserve way more!

The pink cookies were delicious! Although I don't know if Brian ended up getting any he let the girls hold the cookie on the way home and I think it was gone by the time we made it home. They saved one bite for me but not for dad go figure. I thought that was a little funny. Thanks for remembering the wonderful men in our lives!
